Complications of Vaginal Atrophy

There are many advantages to passing through menopause (no more periods), but there are also some disadvantages such as a decline in your vaginal health, also known as postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis.  These changes can greatly interfere with your sex life and daily routine.

While many of our goals here at Advanced Aesthetics Lopez Plastic Surgery is to provide our clients with the services they need to look good on the outside, we also believe that more intimate areas require the same high standard of care. As skin care experts, Dr. Manuel Lopez and our team understand the forces that rob your skin of its vitality and health.  This same process happens in the tissues of your vagina.

To fight back, we’ve equipped ourselves with the latest vaginal rejuvenation technology, but before we get into that, let’s first take a look at what we’re up against.

The implications of declining vaginal health

During your reproductive years, your body produces plenty of estrogen and progesterone, reproductive hormones that, among other things, keep your vaginal tissues healthy and lubricated for intercourse and to accommodate delivery.

Once you pass through menopause, your ovaries, which are the primary producers of your reproductive hormones, shut down. As a result, you can experience mild-to-moderate side effects, such as:

Vaginal dryness

About half of post-menopausal women between the ages of 51 and 60 report problems with vaginal dryness due to a lack of lubrication.

Thinning vaginal tissue

With the decline in estrogen, the tissues in your vagina can thin, making intercourse uncomfortable. The same thinning can occur in your genitalia, namely your external vaginal lips. Another byproduct of thinning tissue is that it’s more prone to becoming inflamed or irritated.

Shortened vaginal canal

If you’ve experienced pain during penetration, this could be the result of a reduction in the length of your vaginal canal.

Incontinence

With the decline in tissue health, you may lose support for your bladder which can lead to problems with incontinence.

Regaining your vaginal health

Not all women experience vaginal atrophy and women tend to develop symptoms to varying degrees. If you’re experiencing changes that are affecting your quality of life, the good news is that we can help with our innovative Candela™ CO2RE® Intima laser.

With the CO2RE system, we deliver CO2 energy into your tissues which elicits a collagen response to restore tone and elasticity in both your internal and external vaginal tissues.
